Having a good resume when searching for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) job is the right thing to do to give yourself an advantage with employers or hiring managers.

You need such resume to win the heart of employers and get an appointment for an interview from them, where you will be able to convince them to give you the job.

Writing a great resume for the EMT job is not as difficult as some people think; if you will pay attention to the tips we are sharing here and use the sample resume for the position below, you will definitely be able to write a good one for yourself.

The Resume Format

The process of writing a resume starts from choosing a format. There are various resume formats you may choose from, however, don’t spend much time thinking of which format to choose as all formats are good enough.

It isn’t the format that determines the effectiveness of a resume but how well its content is crafted.

To show you how to write an effective resume for the EMT position, we will be looking at producing a resume with the format of four sections.

We will show you how to write each of the sections, namely Objective, Core Competence, Work Experience and Professional Qualification, that makes the employer see you as the best emergency medical technician to hire, and so gives you the much desired interview appointment.

Now, let’s see how to write the objective statement, which makes up the first section of the resume:

The EMT Resume Objective Section

The objective section of your resume is the perfect place to hit the ground running in your bid to win the heart of the employer.

It is where you need to communicate your interest in working as an EMT. Aptly communicate your passion and commensurate skill for the job.

Considering the ridiculous amount of resume the average employer seeking to hire an emergency medical technician reads on daily basis, you will not undermine the importance of good first impression.

The objective section is your first contact with the employer, leverage on it by appealing to their major need for an EMT.

The job is half done, if you captivate them with an objective statement that shows your capacity to deliver an essential value to them.

However, to make the most of this section, you must go beyond assuming their major needs; get specific. And to achieve this, simply observe the content of their advertisement for the job.

It is fast becoming a norm for employers to advertise the specific requirements and job description of the kind of medical technician they wish to employ. They do this to cut down the volume of application for the job position. So take advantage of it.

Take medical centers for instance, they employ emergency medical technicians who are skilled in emergency response, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation technique, examination and screening, medical transport procedures and proficient with equipment such as automated external defibrillators, and are able to stay calm even under intense situations.

So, make sure your objective statement communicates both your passion and expertise, and you would have boosted your chances of getting that all important call.

EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) Objective Examples for Resume:

Perhaps, you learn better with examples (just like most people), here are some examples to also serve as a guide in making the objective section of your EMT resume, standout.

  • Seeking the position of Emergency Medical Technician in XYZ Medical center where my exceptional abilities in emergency response, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, examination and screening, in-depth knowledge of medical transport procedures, proficiency with equipment such as automated external defibrillators, and remarkable calmness even under intense situations as remarked by my past employers will be employed.
  • Seeking the job of Emergency Medical Technician in a growing medical institution where my many years of experience in emergency response working as an EMT in a medical center, will be very useful in saving lives and increasing the reputation of such institution.

Please kindly note that the first example is suitable only in situations where the objective statement is targeted at a specific and already known institution where such vacancy exist. The second is more generic.

With the objective statement done with, we will now go to second section, which shows the employer the relevant skills and other qualities you possess that will enhance your delivery as an EMT:

Core Competence Section

In this section of the resume, you are expected to highlight what makes you exceptional as an emergency medical technician; skills, key talents, knowledge, abilities, and experience.

The delicate nature of the job naturally calls for only those with certain criterions. Some of those criterions include but are not limited to; first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, examination and screening, comprehensive knowledge of medical transport procedures, administration of oxygen, and calmness in intense situation to reassure patients and bystanders.

Every attribute of yours that strongly suggests your capacity to deliver on the job should come under the core competence section. This job is not for ‘anyone’, so show prospective employers you are competent.

The next section provides the opportunity to show prospective employers the experience you have acquired working as an emergency medical technician or in a similar position:

Work Experience

The work experience section is where your prospective employers tend to verify your claim of being competent for the job. It can also be called the professional experience or work history section.

Experience reduces the rate of mistakes, and mistakes in this scenario could mean loss of lives.

Therefore, medical institutions in most cases hire tested hands than fresh talents. So use this section to document the duties and responsibilities that you have performed in the past, or that you are currently doing that are relevant to the job of an EMT.

Other sections tell, but this section shows with verifiable proof your abilities and competence. So it is advisable to use a copy of the Emergency Medical Technician job description when writing this section so long as the duties and responsibilities in it reflect your true experience.

Please, make sure all verbs used in describing your present work description are stated in present tense while those used in describing your previous work activities remain in past tense.

Now, we come to the last section where you will emphasize the education and trainings you have completed that make you suitable for the position:

Professional Qualification

In this section, your educational accomplishments and all completed training programs that make you qualified for the job of emergency medical technician should be stated.

Having seen how the various sections can be completed, we will not put that knowledge to work in creating a complete resume for the job:
