Anesthesiologist Job Description, Duties, and Responsibilities
What Does an Anesthesiologist Do?
An anesthesiologist is responsible for taking care of patients before, during, and after a medical or surgical process by making sure that anesthesia is correctly and properly administered to patients.
His/her job description entails looking after patients to make sure that complications do not arise, and to also ensure the comfort of patients at all times.
Usually, the anesthesiologist meets with patients to discuss and find out more about their medical history and to evaluate patients’ condition (this normally takes place before the commencement of any form of surgery or sensitive treatment).
In the process of evaluating a patient’s condition, the anesthesiologist makes sure that he/she fully explains the entire surgical/treatment procedure to the patient so as to make him/her know and understand what to expect, and also be psychologically prepared for the whole procedure.
During the treatment or surgical procedure phase, the anesthesiologist meticulously monitors the patient’s important (vital) signs and also makes all the necessary adjustments in anesthesia.
He/she in most cases may also be involved in the management of the patient’s pain during and after treatment procedure.
Generally anesthesiologists focus on surgical patients and pain relief. Their work description also entails monitoring patients through their early recovery stages after a surgery, and also administering appropriate drugs during the patient’s recovery.
During the first surgery phase, he/she administers the anesthesia, during the surgery proper, he/she makes use of different equipment to monitor the patient’s important/vital signs like the patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, brain functions, and breathing.
As the surgery proceeds, the anesthesiologist may have to adjust the patient’s anesthesia to suit changes in the patient’s physical condition.
When the surgery is over, the anesthesiologist’s role will involve administering drugs/medications that will help reverse or undo the effect(s) of the anesthetics and bringing the patient back to consciousness.
When every necessary procedure has been carried out, the patient is moved to the recovery room.
While in the recovery room, the patient’s vital signs are still closely monitored by nurses and other surgical room staff under the supervision of the anesthesiologist. He/she decides when a patient is well enough to leave the recovery room.
It is important to note that anesthesiologists usually work as part of a team. This team usually involves doctors performing the surgery and the nurses working with them.
In this case the anesthesiologist works directly and closely with the nurse anesthetics who helps in administering the necessary medications before, during, and after a surgical procedure.
