What is unique about HP is that they started giving out bonuses almost immediately after the company was established. After Hewlett and Packard formalized their partnership in 1939, the company started giving out $5 Christmas bonuses the following year.

At last, this transitioned to a profit-sharing program, occurring twice a year after the second and four quarters.

Either Hewlett or Packard would get on the company’s loudspeaker to announce a percentage that would be added to each employee’s paycheck.

Long after Christmas bonuses had been moved to the department level, as this continued into the late 1970s, one of the two founders would still pick up the microphone and announce to thousands of employees in company plants across the planet the bonus percentage.

Flexible work arrangements

Hewlett-Packard, in the early 1970s, became the first company in the United States to offer flextime – and became one of the first companies to promote telecommuting later in 1994. The company was committed to making life easier for individual employees, even before these formal policies were in place.

Health insurance

In 1942, after an employee contracted tuberculosis, Hewlett-Packard launched a health insurance plan for all its employees.

The family of the employee who contracted tuberculosis was supported financially by Bill and Dave who stepped in immediately. Then they took a step further to establish catastrophic health insurance plan for all HP employees.

Free coffee and snacks

Sharing of coffee and snacks is done twice a day after the chimes would ring. Immediately, everybody would leave their desks, or stools for production people, and temporarily abandon the production line and head straight to where there are coffee pots and trays of donuts or some days, Danish rolls.

Customers get amazed at these breaks, because they see that employees don’t have to pay for any of these. It is time-saving, though costly, but worth the money spent as this contributes more to the company’s success.

Free vacation land

Hewlett and Packard bought Little Basin in 1955, a parcel of land an hour away from Palo Alto. One surprising thing is that you might not see this at any companies today.

The land was cleared, with Hewlett helping on the saw and Packard helping to run the tractor. The purpose was to create a recreation area that could contain about 2,000 people at once for company picnics.

Redwood forest, being the surrounding, was left untouched for HP employees and their families to use for camping.

Little Basin became a beloved place for a lot of families to camp on weekends. When combined with the stock options and the annual bonus, it’s hard to seek employment elsewhere even in the face of better offers.
